Big Island 08/25 - 08/26 2012

I have been wanting to go to the Big Island and was so excited when Joe booked a trip for my birthday (well the weekend after, close enough!) We had the best time! We stayed at the Kilauea Military Camp in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park & it was awesome!
The former director of the camp - his wife was really into stained glass so there were really cool stained glass windows/sconces/light fixtures everywhere. The cabin we stayed in was really neat & had tons of cool architectural details.
We rented a Jeep (which Joe was really excited about) & we took off to see the sights!
Joe in front of the Halema'uma'u Crater - it is tough to tell but there is steam coming from it.
Joe in one of the Lava tubes - huge tunnels formed from flowing lava.
Me at one of the Lava fields - literally there was lava everywhere!
We even hiked to see some
We even hiked through the lava fields to see kii pohaku or petroglyphs. These lava rock carvings were pretty neat, it was amazing how many there were.
We saw plenty of waterfalls (the one pictured is Rainbow falls). We actually don't have too many on Oahu, so this was a pretty neat sight! We had quite an interesting ride up Mauna Loa (it was completely dark, windy twisty road that was quite foreboding) - we tried to stargaze but didn't see much. We also tried to summit Mauna Kea (the highest point in the US & significantly taller than Mount Everest, but much of the volcano is below sea-level), however the guide would only let us go up to the Vistor's Center (9,300 foot elevation level) - we couldn't summit due to my pregnancy. This sign at the Visitor Center cracked me up - gotta watch out for those invisible cows! :)
We had such a great time - we loved our time on the Big Island!
